The forest was looking great this afternoon. With all the recent rain the lush greens of spring are showing their colours, and drenched in sunshine the forest looks gorgeous.
There once was a time where I viewed the New Forest as a bit dull, preferring the more mountainous terrain, and rugged outcrops of places like Dartmoor. But after starting running and having the forest on my doorstep the last eighteen months, I have completely changed my perception of the place.
It is not as hilly as other places, nor does it have rocky crags to play on, but after seeing it change through the seasons I believe it is simply a beautiful place, and feel privileged to live to close by. I love the stretches of open heathland with streams running down the shallow valleys, then the contrast of ancient woodland or tall evergreens that take you to a different place. I've got to know quiet little spots, where the wildlife hang out. I often see deer in groups of 40-50!
It is nice just to sit their after a long run, and absorb all of the nature around you. It relaxes me, makes me smile, and makes me a happy person. It makes me who I am. I love being outdoors - and wouldn't have it any other way!
The New Forest - a popular passing place on my runs. |
